Sighting in Geneston, December 27, 2010

Loire-Atlantique, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on December 27, 2010 in Geneston (Loire-Atlantique, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

At around 6:45 pm, a motorist driving along a departmental road noticed a black mass on their left, with two yellow lights beneath it. According to the witness, the lights were rotating and gave the impression of about ten more yellow lights. The sighting lasted five to six seconds. The witness pulled over onto the roadside but could no longer find the phenomenon.

They drove on and saw the object again as it passed overhead. Darkness and mist kept them from making out its outline clearly. They heard a rather dull, low engine noise and noticed a beam of light at the front and a red flashing light. A little further along, they saw the object one last time, at altitude. The witness then thought of an airplane, since Nantes airport lay in that direction. The road was busy with traffic, and nobody appeared to react.

Only one account was collected. GEIPAN classified the case as B: a probable helicopter sighting. The witness did not describe anything strange that contradicted the idea of an aircraft, and their description (a row of lights like portholes, an oval shape, an engine noise, a mobile headlight, red and blue flashing lights) fits such a machine. The distinctive lighting of helicopters, the nearby hospitals and the fairly slow movement point the same way.
