Sighting in Gouesnach, July 7, 2017

Finistère, Bretagne, France

Sighting on July 7, 2017 in Gouesnach (Finistère, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a sky lantern (class A).

What happened

Between 11 p.m. and midnight, the witness was on their terrace with friends when they noticed five luminous objects in the sky, one following another. They travelled from the north-east toward the south-west along the same path, in complete silence. Never were two objects visible at once, and none of them flashed. They moved at a fairly brisk pace and stayed in view for quite a while.

Six days later, the witness contacted the GEIPAN again. They had read up on a similar case seen on the île d'Yeu in 2008 and had gone through the GEIPAN website in detail, in particular the video about Thai lanterns. They were then convinced they had seen the same phenomenon: the lights, speed and trajectory matched those of lanterns in every respect. The witness said they were surprised, as they had not known such sky lanterns existed.

The GEIPAN classed the case A: the witness had observed sky lanterns passing silently one after another across the night sky.
