Sighting on March 3, 1980 in Grandfontaine (Doubs, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably the Moon (class B).

What happened

A couple was driving between 8:30 and 8:45 p.m. when they noticed an orange ball that appeared about as large as the setting sun. A little later the ball was no longer visible to them, and they saw the moon instead, which looked whiter.

The GEIPAN investigation concluded that this was probably an observation of the moon. The witnesses were most likely surprised by its unusual appearance early in the night, when it was lit by the setting sun. The case is classified B (probably identified).
