Sighting in Guérigny, July 20, 2013

Nièvre, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on July 20, 2013 in Guérigny (Nièvre, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 11:30-11:45 pm, two witnesses noticed two intense glows in the sky. One was orange and the other a purplish red. Both the movements and the disappearance took place without any noise, and the two lights moved off in different directions. The investigation collected only one witness account.

GEIPAN compared these luminous balls to Thai lanterns. Two features were out of the ordinary, however: the red-violet colour, which is fairly rare, and above all the fact that the two lights did not move in the same way. The Météociel record for Nevers showed unstable wind at the time, which could explain why the two objects did not follow the same path. The case was classified B (probably identified): sighting of Thai lanterns.
