Sighting in Gueutteville-les-Grès, October 4, 1987

Seine-Maritime, Normandie, France

Sighting on October 4, 1987 in Gueutteville-les-Grès (Seine-Maritime, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

Over several nights between 4 and 18 October 1987, a witness noticed a very bright point of light in the sky. After an article appeared in the regional press, many other people came forward to say they had seen the same thing.

The GEIPAN investigation concluded that the explanation was probably the planet Jupiter, which, together with its moons, was especially bright and striking at that time of year. The case was classified B (probably identified), since a point of light visible over such a long period is consistent with a star-like celestial object.
