Sighting in Hautefort, February 15, 2009

Dordogne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on February 15, 2009 in Hautefort (Dordogne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).

What happened

At around 7:30 pm, a witness saw a bright white phenomenon move quickly past at low altitude. They described it as a tadpole-shaped light. The phenomenon eventually vanished behind the landscape. The sighting lasted less than five seconds, and the witness heard no particular sound.

GEIPAN read the tadpole shape as a bright object trailing a tail. A very short duration combined with a straight path points very probably to a bolide entering the atmosphere. The case, with low strangeness and low consistency, was classed B: most likely a misidentification of a meteoroid re-entry.
