Sighting in Hurbache, June 1, 2009

Vosges, Grand Est, France

Sighting on June 1, 2009 in Hurbache (Vosges, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

While looking through one of their photographs, the witness noticed a bright point in the sky. They had not seen anything of the kind when the picture was taken, so the point was never observed directly. No one else reported seeing the phenomenon.

The image also shows a vertical streak. According to the investigation, this is very probably an artifact of the photo and of the camera's internal processing. The original shot had already been heavily processed by the camera, with increased sharpness and a high level of compression. The other file examined appears to be an enlarged version of it, in which these flaws are magnified.

The bright point could come from sunlight reflecting off an aircraft, a satellite or a balloon. GEIPAN concluded that it was probably a reflection and classified the case as B (probably identified).
