Sighting in Joué-lès-Tours, December 17, 2009

Indre-et-Loire, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on December 17, 2009 in Joué-lès-Tours (Indre-et-Loire, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an animal or natural object (bird, insect, pollen…) (class A).

What happened

A witness took a burst of photographs of a snow-covered landscape from their room on the 7th floor at around 3:37 p.m. While looking at the images on their computer, they noticed a spot on one of the shots and found it puzzling. They had seen nothing unusual when taking the pictures: the spot only appeared afterwards, on the photograph, and it was absent from the next frame.

GEIPAN's working hypothesis was an insect passing close to the photographer, and therefore close to the lens. The case had little strangeness and the initial information was limited, but analysis of the image with the IPACO software added to it. It revealed parameters pointing to an insect very near the lens and moving quickly. The estimated size and speed were consistent with a drosophila-type insect (a fly).

GEIPAN concluded it was a small drosophila-type insect, also known as a "rod" in ufology, and classified the case A (identified). It noted that this kind of case, where the phenomenon is not seen directly and is only discovered on a photo, is no longer handled or is classified quickly.
