Sighting in La Bohalle, July 11, 2010

Maine-et-Loire, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on July 11, 2010 in La Bohalle (Maine-et-Loire, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a sky lantern (class A).

What happened

At about 2:20 a.m., the witness noticed streaks of light in the sky, followed by several red-orange discs moving silently. The witness watched for roughly 15 to 20 minutes and took photographs during that time.

The investigation found that the "red discs" visible in the photos resulted from the zoom the witness used when taking the pictures. The features described, namely several waves of red-orange lights travelling in the same direction, largely match those of flying lanterns, a known phenomenon. This explanation was confirmed when the village mayor found partly burnt paper lanterns in the town hall car park. GEIPAN classified the case as A: the sighting was of Thai lanterns drifting through the sky.
