Sighting in Lambesc, January 26, 1983

Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on January 26, 1983 in Lambesc (Bouches-du-Rhône, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).

What happened

Several witnesses in the Bouches-du-Rhône département noticed, early in the morning between 6:55 and 7:08, a bright white ball moving horizontally across the sky. A colored trail followed it. The observers said the object travelled at very high speed and made no noise at all. Each sighting was short, lasting between 4 and 45 seconds, and the phenomenon eventually vanished into the landscape.

GEIPAN could not gather any further information about the case. What is known matches an atmospheric re-entry, which is the probable explanation. The case is therefore classified B, probably identified.
