Sighting in Landouzy-la-Ville, August 8, 2019

Aisne, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on August 8, 2019 in Landouzy-la-Ville (Aisne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the star Arcturus (class A).

What happened

Starting at 11:28 pm one evening, two people watched luminous phenomena in the night sky, first with the naked eye and then through binoculars. The observation lasted more than an hour and a half, and six videos were recorded on a mobile phone. Only one of the two witnesses gave an account, and it was not very precise. It described rapid movements, rapid colour changes and an object shaped like a "jellyfish".

The GEIPAN investigation treated the sightings as several separate phenomena. The third one closely resembled the star Arcturus: its colour and brightness matched very well, the rapid colour changes are typical of that star's twinkling, and the direction of observation was consistent. The reported rapid movements did not fit this explanation, but the very long duration of the sighting shows the phenomenon could not have been moving fast. The jellyfish shape was most likely caused by the poor optics of the binoculars, since it does not appear in the videos.

The third phenomenon was therefore classified A, a very probable misidentification of Arcturus. The first two could be neither identified nor analysed because of insufficient data.
