Sighting in Launaguet, October 8, 2019
Haute-Garonne, Occitanie, France
Sighting on October 8, 2019 in Launaguet (Haute-Garonne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a meteor or fireball (class A).
What happened
In the early morning, a driver noticed a very bright white point of light in the sky, stronger than Venus. The witness immediately thought of a large piece of debris falling out of orbit.
This description matches at least fifty other reports of a bolide passing over, that is, a meteoroid (a small rocky body) entering the atmosphere. It occurred at 05:20 UT, which was 07:20 local French time. It was visible across Occitanie and Nouvelle-Aquitaine and was recorded by the IMO (International Meteor Organization).
The GEIPAN therefore concluded that the witness had seen a bolide and classified the case A, meaning identified.
