Sighting in Le Bono, October 22, 2020

Morbihan, Bretagne, France

Sighting on October 22, 2020 in Le Bono (Morbihan, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the Moon (class A).

What happened

At around 11:20 pm, a witness noticed a triangular luminous phenomenon, first with the naked eye and then through binoculars. It was bright but not dazzling, an intense yellow, with horizontal and vertical black lines at its center. It lay to the west of the witness, above and to the right of the left pillar of a bridge on the D101 road that crosses the Auray river. The witness then saw it move away backward, quickly and steadily.

There was only one witness, but the GEIPAN rated the case's consistency as good: the account was complete and relied on precise landmarks. No photo was taken, but the sketch the witness provided was perfectly clear.

The investigation concluded that the witness had observed the Moon. Its position, close to setting, matched the reported location exactly, and the yellow color is consistent with the Moon near the horizon. The Moon was at First Quarter, so its shape would resemble a triangle if the lower part was hidden by the landscape. The black lines seen through binoculars could have been branches, antennas or the bridge railing in front of the Moon. The rapid departure is explained by the Moon disappearing below the horizon after a few minutes. The case was classified A.
