Sighting in Le Croisic, April 15, 2007
Loire-Atlantique, Pays de la Loire, France
Sighting on April 15, 2007 in Le Croisic (Loire-Atlantique, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty (class A).
What happened
Over several nights in a row, a number of witnesses at a campsite noticed a bright point of light in the sky. They described it as a large ball of light that kept changing colour between green, red and blue when viewed through binoculars.
During the investigation, the gendarmes saw the phenomenon for themselves. They took a series of photographs and a video of about 13 seconds. An astronomer in charge of the preliminary analysis quickly leaned towards an astronomical explanation, especially as the sky was exceptionally clear at the time and well suited to striking observations. A field investigation carried out from 11 to 13 June 2007 was meant to support this hypothesis, and it showed that the witnesses had observed Sirius, a star that is very conspicuous at that time of year. Several people had also contacted the GEIPAN around the same period to report particularly bright stars.
The case was therefore classified A, identified as an observation of Sirius. The investigation was also used as material for the filming of the France 3 programme "Pièces à conviction", broadcast on 29 June.
