Sighting in Le Crotoy, October 9, 1954

Somme, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on October 9, 1954 in Le Crotoy (Somme, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 8 p.m., three witnesses, who were farmers, saw an orange disc in the sky shaped like an upturned plate. They watched it for about 45 minutes, until it disappeared toward the northwest. The sighting is known only from a brief intelligence message sent by the gendarmerie nationale.

The length of the observation and the shape described can sometimes point to a mistaken sighting of the Moon. The Moon was indeed in the sky that evening, but in the southeast and at nearly 30° elevation, which does not fit the circumstances of the sighting at all. GEIPAN classified the case as C, because there was not enough information.
