Sighting in Le Lauzet-Ubaye, February 3, 1976

Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on February 3, 1976 in Le Lauzet-Ubaye (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 7:30 p.m., several witnesses saw a silvery-white glow in the sky. It rose above a hill, then gradually faded as it went down behind the slope, which hid it from view. Just before it appeared, a noise had been heard, similar to the one made by an aircraft breaking the sound barrier (a double "bang").

The gendarmerie checked the area that had been pointed out. No marks were found on the ground, so the possibility of a fire or of something falling to earth was ruled out. Because there was not enough information, GEIPAN classified the case as C.
