Sighting in Peyruis, March 20, 2016

Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on March 20, 2016 in Peyruis (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

The witness was lying in bed when a bright flash of light lit up the bedroom, immediately followed by a loud noise. The whole thing lasted about one second. The witness did not go outside, so they saw nothing of the sky directly and could not describe any shape or position of a phenomenon. No other witness came forward.

Later, the witness noticed traces of burnt grass in a neighbour's field, and the next day found a round mark in the ground.

GEIPAN noted that the light could have had many origins, such as a storm, a floodlight or a meteorite entering the atmosphere. Since no unidentified aerospace phenomenon had actually been observed, there was no particular reason to investigate the marks as being linked to one. Round marks can also have varied causes, such as fairy ring mushrooms, the site of an old inflatable pool or a motorcycle skidding. They may have been there for some time and gone unnoticed, especially as they were not right next to the house. The case was classified C: insufficient observational data.
