Sighting in Le Passage, January 23, 1983

Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on January 23, 1983 in Le Passage (Isère, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

Several witnesses watched a grey-black phenomenon in the sky in the late afternoon, for roughly a quarter of an hour. It had no shine, and its altitude was estimated at 2,500 metres. It was elongated, or V-shaped, and moved horizontally across the sky without making any sound. Binoculars did not help to identify it. One of the witnesses, a former member of an aircrew, thought it looked like a trail left by a Boeing 747 and put its speed at 500 to 600 km/h.

GEIPAN noted that the V shape and this speed fit an aircraft seen from behind during its descent. The investigation concluded that the witnesses had probably mistaken an aircraft for something else, although the aircraft could not be pinned down. The case was classified B.
