Sighting in Le Plessis-Grammoire, June 20, 2010

Maine-et-Loire, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on June 20, 2010 in Le Plessis-Grammoire (Maine-et-Loire, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a sky lantern (class A).

What happened

At around half past midnight, on the night from Saturday to Sunday, three witnesses noticed three glowing red-orange spheres in the sky. The objects moved together in the same direction, toward the northwest, at low altitude and without making any noise.

GEIPAN concluded that these features match a flight of Thai lanterns, a possibility that one of the witnesses had also considered. The wind was blowing from the north-northwest, which is consistent with the direction of travel described. The case was classified A: the sighting was the passing of Thai lanterns.
