Sighting in Le Pontet, April 8, 2014

Vaucluse, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on April 8, 2014 in Le Pontet (Vaucluse, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

The witness was at home, in front of a half-open glass patio door, at some point between 10 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., when they noticed a group of fluorescent green lights in the night sky. The lights seemed to be linked to one another by lines, and the whole formation stretched over roughly 10 m. It moved in a straight line without making any sound. The witness felt that the objects were being carried by the wind, as if they were "floating" in the air. The phenomenon eventually disappeared behind nearby buildings. It travelled from north-northwest to south-southeast. No other witness account was collected.

The wind recorded at Avignon blew from north to south, which matches the direction described. GEIPAN concluded that the lights were probably green Thai lanterns. These lanterns come in a range of colours and shapes, and they may have been tied together, which would explain the lines seeming to join the lights. Festive releases of this kind most often happen on weekends, but a celebration on a weekday, a birthday for instance, is also possible. The case was classified B: Thai lanterns.
