Sighting in Le Tampon, September 16, 2012

La Réunion, France

Sighting on September 16, 2012 in Le Tampon (La Réunion, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).

What happened

In the evening, at 10:16 p.m., the witness saw a very bright yellow object coming from the southwest. It moved quickly above the horizon toward the mountain, on a descending path. The very luminous object then broke into two pieces, which disappeared behind the horizon to the northeast.

GEIPAN found that the witness's description fits a fragmenting fireball very well, most likely caused by a meteoroid entering the atmosphere. The case was classified B, meaning probably identified.
