Sighting in Léguevin, November 27, 2015

Haute-Garonne, Occitanie, France

Sighting on November 27, 2015 in Léguevin (Haute-Garonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

Between 10:30 and 11:00, a witness at home watched and filmed several objects moving across the sky. Only one account was collected, along with two videos.

The investigation found that, apart from one spherical object, the objects were aircraft. Some flew high and left a white trail; others flew much lower, and so left none, having taken off from Blagnac. Air traffic analysis (Flightradar) showed two aircraft moving in opposite directions, the low one from north to south and the other from south to north. This matched one of the videos and the witness's description exactly. The elongated, wingless look is common for low-flying aircraft lit by low, grazing sunlight, as at 10:30 in November.

The spherical object had an angular size of about 0.05 degrees and an elevation of 15 to 20°, estimated from the leaves left on a nearby tree 30 m from the filming position. It could have been a child's balloon at very low altitude, or a solar thermal balloon a few metres across, several kilometres away and at 1 to 3 km altitude. The second option was judged more likely: the ground wind, blowing west to east, hardly explained the strong north-south component of the movement, whereas the wind at higher altitude did blow from north to south. This wind reversal with altitude could also explain the change of path seen at the end of the video, which the witness described as an arc of a circle. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B, a probable thermal balloon for the spherical object.
