Sighting in Fontiès-d'Aude, May 1995
Aude, Occitanie, France
Sighting in May 1995 in Fontiès-d'Aude (Aude, France). After investigation, GEIPAN considers this phenomenon unexplained (class D).
What happened
A couple saw a large dark object above their house at around 3:30 a.m., one that could have been mistaken for a helicopter. It hovered for a few minutes without any noise, smoke or trail. It shone beams of light onto the ground five or six times, then moved off at moderate speed. During this time, the witness's dogs went to hide inside the house and did not bark. The exact date is uncertain: the sighting took place between 25 and 28 May 1995.
About a week later, the dogs began vomiting and had diarrhoea. The witness's spouse experienced health problems, while the witness felt very tired. The witness also noticed that the vegetation had deteriorated where the beams had lit it, and reported that a neighbour had suddenly been taken to hospital. Worried, they contacted the Sécurité Civile to ask whether these effects could be linked to the object.
The investigation could not identify the object, but it found no link between its appearance and the alleged effects either. The couple's health could be explained by the spouse's medical treatment and by the intense heat. The neighbour's hospitalisation was not surprising given their age. Many plants outside the area supposedly affected showed the same signs of deterioration. The phenomenon remained unexplained, hence the D classification.
