Sighting in Lescar, May 20, 2004

Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on May 20, 2004 in Lescar (Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

At around 12:30 a.m., a witness and their partner were on their terrace when they noticed a shape moving at very high speed without making any sound. A powerful beam of light trailed behind it, while the front was green. The shape then slowed down, the beam went out and only the green light remained, before that too disappeared completely. The sighting lasted three to four minutes.

After an article appeared in the press, a second witness, an amateur astronomer, came forward. They had watched the phenomenon for a few dozen seconds and interpreted it as an atmospheric re-entry.

The case was classified B: GEIPAN adopted the atmospheric re-entry hypothesis as the probable explanation.
