Sighting in Louviers, August 6, 1977

Eure, Normandie, France

Sighting on August 6, 1977 in Louviers (Eure, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 1:30 in the morning, two people standing outside their home noticed a very bright yellow-orange glow. It moved slowly and then stopped. For a brief moment the witnesses made out two small red lights, after which the glow moved on again. The sighting lasted three minutes and no sound was heard.

A week later, at the same time of night, one of the two witnesses, at home, saw an egg-shaped luminous object resting in a field on the far side of the river that runs along their property. The object stayed on the ground for about ten minutes, without any noise.

The owner of the field noticed no marks or changes of any kind where the object was thought to have been. The gendarmerie did find three shallow holes of irregular shape, but could not say with certainty what had caused them. Soil samples were taken, and the test for radioactivity came back negative. The checks requested from the meteorological services, the engineers and the nearby radar station also turned up nothing. No other witness account was collected.

GEIPAN classified the case as C: it involved the movement of a luminous phenomenon, but the available data were insufficient to reach a conclusion.
