Sighting in Magny-Saint-Médard, November 29, 2015

Côte-d'Or, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on November 29, 2015 in Magny-Saint-Médard (Côte-d'Or, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

A motorist saw four orange glows appear one after another in the night sky. They drifted slowly along a straight path and made no noise at all. The witness filmed the scene with a mobile phone. The date on the police report was wrong: the sighting took place on Sunday 29 November 2015, not on the 30th. No other testimony was collected.

GEIPAN found that everything was consistent with a release of lanterns. Their appearance, colour and brightness matched, several objects passing one behind the other is typical, and a Sunday lent itself to a festive event. The only doubt concerned the direction of travel, since the witness gave no details on it or on how they perceived the wind. However, analysis of the video, although of poor quality, indicated a probable south-to-north movement, in line with the wind recorded at weather stations 15 to 20 km away. The case remained of poor consistency because of the lack of information. GEIPAN classified it B: probable observation of Thai lanterns.
