Sighting in Mailly-le-Camp, November 1, 2010
Aube, Grand Est, France
Sighting on November 1, 2010 in Mailly-le-Camp (Aube, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably the star Sirius (class B).
What happened
The witness was driving at about 130 km/h when they noticed a very bright white halo in the sky that seemed to swirl around. The questionnaire they filled in, with no gendarmerie report available, gave neither the exact location nor the precise duration of the sighting.
The vehicle was travelling from north to south, so the driver was looking south through the windscreen. At the time of the sighting, Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, was in that direction. Its changing brightness and twinkling, combined with the visual fatigue of driving, can account for the impression of swirling movement.
A precise check was not possible. GEIPAN classified the case as B: the most likely explanation is that the witness saw Sirius.
