Sighting in Mallemort, February 22, 2014

Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on February 22, 2014 in Mallemort (Bouches-du-Rhône, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).

What happened

The witness saw a very bright green light cross the sky in three to four seconds, leaving an orange trail behind it. The sighting took place in the evening, at about 8:10 p.m.

The press covered the event and reported that the meteorite had been seen in the sky, but no other witness came forward to the GEIPAN. The BOAM website, which collects camera footage, reported nothing. On that date France was under cloud cover, except for the south-east.

The GEIPAN classified the case as B. The phenomenon described is a bolide, most likely caused by a meteoroid entering the atmosphere, that is, a meteorite fall.
