Insufficient data

Sighting in Marchiennes, November 5, 1996

Nord, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on November 5, 1996 in Marchiennes (Nord, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

Two witnesses saw a luminous, cylindrical phenomenon cross the sky very quickly, leaving a large trail behind it. They heard no sound. No further information could be gathered from them.

The investigation noted that the observation site was close to Lille airport and that the phenomenon followed the same route as airliners. Because the data were insufficient, GEIPAN classified the case as C: it was the very fast passage of a luminous object with a large trail, and nothing more could be established.
