Sighting in Marssac-sur-Tarn, November 25, 2020

Tarn, Occitanie, France

Sighting on November 25, 2020 in Marssac-sur-Tarn (Tarn, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

At around midday, a motorist noticed a dark object in the sky whose shape kept changing. The witness stopped and took two photos and two videos. The object made no particular noise as it passed, and no other witness came forward.

GEIPAN considered the case to have low strangeness and medium consistency: there was only one witness, and the object did not show up in the photos or videos, which deprived the investigation of useful comparisons to confirm the explanation. The sighting took place in broad daylight above a town, with no other testimony, which further reduces its strangeness.

The description given (oblong shape, dark colour) fits a balloon, and the trajectory the witness reported is consistent with the wind direction. The witness also later compared their sighting to a photograph of a phenomenon that turned out to be a solar balloon. The case was classified B: probable misidentification of a balloon.
