Sighting in Mauléon-Licharre, January 2, 1979

Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on January 2, 1979 in Mauléon-Licharre (Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

During the night of 1 to 2 January, two witnesses saw an object showing red lights for less than ten seconds. They compared it to a kite. It moved quickly from north to south, making no noise at all, at an altitude of about 100 metres above the built-up area.

No other witness to the event could be found during the investigation. Because information was lacking, GEIPAN classified the case as C (insufficient data): it was an observation of a luminous object above a town, and nothing more could be established.
