Sighting in Merfy, May 29, 1979

Marne, Grand Est, France

Sighting on May 29, 1979 in Merfy (Marne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty (class A).

What happened

At about 11:30 pm, a motorist driving along a small country road was surprised to see a bright orange, crescent-shaped object that seemed to be coming toward them. The object, low in the sky, appeared to follow the motorist for the whole drive toward the northwest. No sound was heard, and the witness eventually lost sight of it.

The next day, the witness went back to the same spot and saw the same object again, this time white. It disappeared behind woods, again in the northwest direction.

The investigation used the sky chart for that evening, which showed the Moon low in the sky to the northwest, with a magnitude of -8.91. The witness had therefore observed the Moon. The impression that it follows a moving observer is well known. GEIPAN classified the case as A (identified).
