Insufficient data

Sighting in Sézanne, May 30, 2012

Marne, Grand Est, France

Sighting on May 30, 2012 in Sézanne (Marne, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

The witness found a patch of flattened grass on a wooded plot they owned. The circle was about 4 metres across, and the grass in it was slightly yellowed. Nothing in the surroundings suggested that an animal or a vehicle had caused it. No light or object in the sky was reported; only the mark on the ground was observed.

The investigation had just one photograph taken by the witness, with no measurements and no careful inspection of the mark or its surroundings. The least improbable explanation was a vortex produced by a local wind effect, but it could not be backed up by relevant weather data or by any sign of other disturbances in the area. None of the hypotheses considered was judged satisfactory given the usable data.

GEIPAN rated the testimony as of fairly average consistency: reasonably precise, but from a single witness, with one photograph and no examination of the site. The phenomenon seemed rather strange and not at all ordinary at first sight. The case is classified C: unidentifiable as it stands, since the lack of information does not allow a solid conclusion.
