Sighting in Meyzieu, February 3, 2009

Rhône, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on February 3, 2009 in Meyzieu (Rhône, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

The witness contacted GEIPAN in July 2010 to report an observation that was more than a year old. On an evening in February 2009, between 7:00 and 7:15 p.m., they were walking along a street when several orange, egg-shaped lights caught their attention. The lights moved silently, arranged in the shape of a triangle. They gradually drew away, and the witness eventually lost sight of them.

At first glance the case seemed to have little strangeness: Thai lanterns released during the Chinese New Year festivities, which had begun on 29 January, were an obvious thought. The investigation found, however, that the lights were moving against the wind, which complicated that explanation. The account nonetheless lacked consistency, as it contained many imprecisions and had been submitted 17 months after the events. This delay ruled out any request to air traffic control. For lack of further information, the case was classified C, meaning insufficient data.
