Sighting in Mèze, August 20, 2012

Hérault, Occitanie, France

Sighting on August 20, 2012 in Mèze (Hérault, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

At about 10:30 p.m., two witnesses noticed a round, luminous object in the sky. It moved in an unusual way and made no sound, then quickly disappeared. One of the witnesses described the light as white.

The investigation relied on the weather record from Béziers Cap d'Agde, a station very close by. It showed a light, highly unstable wind that evening, blowing from the west at first and then shifting to the north. The movements the witnesses described clearly matched those of an object carried by the wind. A fireworks display was held that same evening, which suggested a Thai lantern or another luminous balloon released for the celebrations. The white colour fitted a Thai lantern poorly, since people who see those most often report orange-red lights.

GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable sighting of a luminous balloon, specifically an LED balloon.
