Sighting in Mirande, November 26, 2010

Gers, Occitanie, France

Sighting on November 26, 2010 in Mirande (Gers, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

Two witnesses were looking at the sky between 11:30 p.m. and midnight when they noticed five or six yellow-orange points of light, all the same size. The lights moved silently, tracing quick, erratic curves around another point of light that stayed still. The moving lights went out all at once, while the stationary one faded out gradually, as the witnesses noticed.

The GEIPAN considered several explanations. Thai lanterns were the first idea, but one of the witnesses insisted that the lights moved far too fast and stayed centred on a fixed point. A pyrotechnic or electrical display set up for a celebration was also suggested, but there seems to have been no major celebration in Mirande that evening. A natural cause was ruled out because of how complex the movements were. The events were too long ago to track down other witnesses and open an investigation, so the case was classified C, for insufficient information.
