Sighting in Montpellier, June 4, 2010

Hérault, Occitanie, France

Sighting on June 4, 2010 in Montpellier (Hérault, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At 11:15 pm, a witness saw three points of light in the sky. They hung motionless for two to three minutes, all the same size, and then vanished together. According to the description, a single point had appeared first, followed by three in total.

The witness did not wish to make a statement to the gendarmerie, and no other testimony was collected about the phenomenon.

GEIPAN compared this successive appearance with that of luminous lanterns, which show up one after another in the sky and then go out, something the witness could have perceived as disappearing. At midnight, the Montpellier weather station recorded a light northerly wind, consistent with the path of a light object as described by the witness. The phenomenon had a low degree of strangeness. The flying lantern hypothesis was judged the most likely, hence the B classification (probably identified).
