Sighting in Montreuil-sur-Ille, September 27, 2013

Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne, France

Sighting on September 27, 2013 in Montreuil-sur-Ille (Ille-et-Vilaine, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

On a Friday evening, between 10:15 and 10:30 pm, a witness at home saw an orange ball cross the cloudy sky. Further, similar passages followed. Each time, the object moved silently from east to west.

The witness took photographs, but their rather poor quality provides little information.

The investigation found that the description matches Thai lanterns in every respect: orange balls following one another along the same horizontal path, in the direction of the local wind. According to the website meteociel.fr, the wind was blowing steadily from the east at about 15 km/h. It was also a weekend evening. The GEIPAN classified this case, which it considered not very strange, as category B: the sighting was probably that of two Thai lanterns passing one after the other.
