Sighting in Montrevel, September 10, 2017

Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on September 10, 2017 in Montrevel (Isère, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a meteor or fireball (class A).

What happened

The witness was looking after their child when a bright, fast-moving light caught their attention, between 9:45 and 10:00 pm by their own reckoning. The object looked round, on fire and yellow-orange, and fell without making any sound. The sighting lasted one to two seconds. The witness hurried to the window, but the light had already vanished. Thinking the object might have come down near the home, the witness searched the next morning and found nothing. The witness put the object's height at about 4 metres, an intuitive estimate with no objective reference point.

Investigators linked this account to at least 25 testimonies describing a bolide, meaning a meteoroid entering the atmosphere, that same evening at 9:29 pm local time. It was visible from Meurthe-et-Moselle to the Bouches-du-Rhône, passing over the Pyrénées-Orientales, Isère and Switzerland. The meteoroid appears to have broken into several pieces at the very end of its luminous path, and 14 cameras of the FRIPON network detected it. The time the witness gave differs slightly, but it was approximate: the witness had not necessarily looked at their clock at that exact moment. A bolide occurs at an altitude of 50 to 100 km and often looks very close, which explains the witness's impression.

The appearance and trajectory described match this bolide despite the time gap. GEIPAN classed the case as A: a very probable bolide.
