Sighting in Morgny-la-Pommeraye, March 31, 1979

Seine-Maritime, Normandie, France

Sighting on March 31, 1979 in Morgny-la-Pommeraye (Seine-Maritime, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

The gendarmerie was called out to examine a piece of ice that had fallen onto a railway station car park. The fall caused no injuries and no damage, although fragments of ice were scattered over about thirty metres. One of the pieces contained beige and red substances.

Samples of this material were analysed and found to contain fat of vegetable or animal origin. GEIPAN classified the case as B (probably identified): the object was a block of ice that had probably broken away from an aircraft. The village lies beneath a heavily used air corridor, and particular weather conditions can cause incidents of this kind.
