Sighting in Mottier, August 26, 2010

Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on August 26, 2010 in Mottier (Isère, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 9:20 p.m., two witnesses who were at home noticed a burning object above their house. Shortly before it caught fire, it had been travelling in a straight line from north to south while oscillating up and down. It then suddenly broke apart into four distinct pieces. The witnesses heard no sound, either while the object was moving or when it broke up.

The gendarmerie report and a supplementary administrative inquiry reached GEIPAN on 15 November 2010. The follow-up investigation showed that the witnesses had probably seen a Thai lantern. It most likely came from a preliminary test ahead of a large release of Thai lanterns planned for a municipal festival over the weekend of 28–29 August 2010. The case was classified B (probably identified).
