Sighting in Muret, June 24, 2014

Haute-Garonne, Occitanie, France

Sighting on June 24, 2014 in Muret (Haute-Garonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

At 8:40 in the morning, a driver taking their child to school noticed two grey, boat-shaped objects hanging motionless side by side in the sky. They could not explain to the child what they were looking at. The two objects eventually drifted away slowly. On the drive back, at 9:08, the witness saw a third object in the same spot, which headed the same way as the others, toward the northeast.

Investigators plotted the four locations of the witness's observations on a satellite photo. Seen from different angles, they make it possible to pinpoint the approximate area where the objects were. They also show a side view (first observation, across the measured wind) and a front or rear view (third observation, along the measured wind). This fits kites seen from the side and from the front relative to the wind.

When reached by phone two years later, the witness rejected this explanation. GEIPAN nevertheless considers it the most likely one, particularly because a leisure area where people fly kites lies just upwind. Users may exceptionally have flown them further downwind in the field, or just upwind of it, so that the witness saw the kites on one side of the road without noticing the people flying them on the other side. The case was classified B: probable sighting of kites.
