Sighting in Nîmes, August 11, 2015

Gard, Occitanie, France

Sighting on August 11, 2015 in Nîmes (Gard, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

In the early afternoon, a family was intrigued by two black craft passing silently across the sky. They were shaped like boomerangs, with a front end resembling a triangle. They quickly disappeared behind trees. The first followed a straight path, while the second abruptly changed direction. No other witness account was collected.

On the day of the sighting, the weather station at Nîmes-Garons recorded a wind reversal, from north in the morning to south in the afternoon. The observation took place right in the middle of this shift, so the local wind at that exact moment cannot be determined. The boomerang shape and the non-straight path suggested a kite, a radio-controlled model aircraft or a drone. A kite seems unlikely: the location is a residential area of detached houses, poorly suited to flying one, especially in unstable wind. The hypothesis of a radio-controlled flying wing appears consistent with the description, but GEIPAN cannot verify it without any other testimony or a photo or video. The case is classified C, for lack of cross-checking.
