Sighting in Nouvelle-Caledonie, October 28, 1994

France

Sighting on October 28, 1994, exact location not given (Nouvelle-Caledonie, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

The pilot and co-pilot of a Dornier 228 were flying level at 10,000 feet when they spotted traffic they could not identify. The pilot described an intense light followed by a long yellow-orange trail. It moved at very high speed and passed over the aircraft from west to east. The co-pilot confirmed the phenomenon, although the two crew members estimated its duration differently, from 12 seconds to one minute.

Two other witnesses on the ground also saw a bright light go by for about ten seconds.

The investigation established that air traffic in the area was fully known and could not account for the phenomenon. The most likely explanation retained was an atmospheric re-entry. GEIPAN classified the case as B (probably identified).
