Sighting in Orgon, September 4, 2021

Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on September 4, 2021 in Orgon (Bouches-du-Rhône, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a balloon (class A).

What happened

Between about 11:50 pm and 12:40 am, on a Saturday night, two people in a garden saw a point of light move across the sky, followed by roughly a hundred more. All of them took the same path: a straight line up to the point directly above the witnesses, where they turned. Only one witness account was collected, along with photos of the phenomenon.

GEIPAN rated the case as having low strangeness and good consistency, even though there was just one account. The photos look very much like a group of lit balloons flying together. The timing, around midnight on a Saturday evening, fits the traditional moment for releasing balloons or lanterns at a wedding, and the path matched the direction of the wind. The lights came from the direction of a venue used for wedding celebrations, only a few hundred metres from the garden. When contacted, the venue's manager confirmed that LED balloons had been released at the time of the sighting. GEIPAN classified the case as A: LED balloons.
