Sighting in Orly-sur-Morin, June 14, 2015

Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on June 14, 2015 in Orly-sur-Morin (Seine-et-Marne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class B).

What happened

Between 3:28 and 3:45 in the morning, a witness noticed a large, slightly elongated oval shape in the sky, yellow-orange in color. It moved silently, in a series of movements and stops, and then disappeared. The witness then went to meet another person to carpool. Together they saw the phenomenon again, and later spotted it once more over another town before losing sight of it. The photos and video the witness took could not be used. Only one witness account was collected.

The investigation found that everything the witnesses described fit a nightclub laser, of the Sky Tracer or Sky Rose type, used on a weekend night. A nightclub is located in a nearby town, within the area where such a laser could theoretically be seen. The investigator could not show that the laser was actually in use that evening. The witness had come up with this explanation too, but objected that no beam had been visible rising from the ground. However, a laser beam may or may not be visible depending on local weather, pollution and the beam's power, since it requires fine suspended particles in the air (water droplets, pollutants, etc.). At the time, visibility exceeded 20 km and no precipitation was recorded, so conditions favored an invisible beam. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B, a probable laser animation.
