Sighting in Palau-del-Vidre, October 2008
Pyrénées-Orientales, Occitanie, France
Sighting in October 2008 in Palau-del-Vidre (Pyrénées-Orientales, France). After investigation, GEIPAN considers this phenomenon unexplained (class D).
What happened
The accounts were collected in November 2009 and concerned something seen about a year earlier, in October 2008. The witness could no longer recall the exact date but placed it toward the end of that month. At around 6 a.m., two people got into their utility vehicle to begin their round. They first noticed a very bright phenomenon, like a star. Then, as they drove through the village, they saw an enormous black triangle with a red light at its center above the houses. It moved slowly over the rooftops.
The investigation treated these as two phenomena that were not necessarily connected. The white point of light seemed too bright to be Saturn, even though Saturn lay in a similar direction. As for the black triangle, an aircraft was considered, but the witness did not mention any position light or any flashing anti-collision lights. Its movement would be consistent with that of a conventional aircraft; it is its shape and its lighting that make it strange. The long delay before the testimony meant that no checks could be made with the aviation authorities.
GEIPAN rated the case as of medium to high strangeness and found that the investigation considerably strengthened its consistency. None of the usual hypotheses satisfactorily explains the triangular object the witnesses described, and the case was classified D1, unexplained.
