Sighting in Péronne, July 16, 2015

Somme, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on July 16, 2015 in Péronne (Somme, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 11 p.m., a witness who was in their garden noticed a large glow in the night sky. They described an orange fireball moving silently and passing very close to the tops of the neighbouring trees. It followed a straight path, then slowly faded away toward the horizon until it disappeared. Beforehand, the witness's partner had taken a photograph, and a scanned copy was attached to the gendarmerie report. Only one witness statement was collected.

GEIPAN noted that the colour and trajectory matched what is typical of a Thai lantern. The direction of travel was also consistent with the wind measured a few kilometres away, blowing from east to west. The witness said the object did not look like a lantern they had seen once before, but such lanterns can look different depending on their colour, altitude and stage of flight. The case was therefore classified B: probably a Thai lantern.
