Sighting in Pierrelatte, June 22, 2023

Drôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on June 22, 2023 in Pierrelatte (Drôme, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a train or group of satellites (class A).

What happened

At around 10:50 p.m., the witness was on the terrace at home when they noticed an object shaped like a large cigar, about 25 metres long, with lit-up portholes. It moved slowly and silently, at about the height of a helicopter, along a northwest–southeast line. Then it suddenly vanished. This was the only account collected, with no photo or video, so the GEIPAN rated the case's consistency as medium.

The investigation ruled out an aircraft origin. It concluded that the witness had very probably seen a train of Starlink satellites, the "G5-7" train, formed after a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch earlier that same day. The train was clearly visible from the southeast of France shortly before 11:00 p.m. Because the satellites were still very close together, they looked like a single cigar-shaped object. The "portholes" were in fact individual satellites lit by sunlight, even though the sun had already set from the witness's position. The disappearance is explained either by the train leaving the witness's field of visibility, or by the satellites moving out of the sunlight. The case is classified A.
