Sighting in Plaisance-du-Touch, August 29, 2019

Haute-Garonne, Occitanie, France

Sighting on August 29, 2019 in Plaisance-du-Touch (Haute-Garonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a drone (class B).

What happened

At around 10 p.m., the witness was looking at the sky. They first noticed a few aircraft, then a faintly luminous circular shape, which they described as a dark "disc or potato." A red light rotated around its edge, while the shape itself did not turn. The object moved in complete silence, at an apparent speed three to five times that of an airliner. The witness was greatly surprised by this speed, as well as by the shape and the glow.

The case rests on a single testimony, with no photo or video of the phenomenon, so its consistency was rated as medium. The GEIPAN investigation concluded that the witness had probably seen a drone. The circular shape, the red light rotating at the periphery and the lack of noise are all consistent with a drone's characteristics. At night, only a drone's lights are really perceived, which accounts for the dark, faintly luminous appearance. The speed is hard to use: estimating it requires knowing the object's real size and distance, which is practically impossible at night without a fixed reference point. The case was classified B, probable drone.
